What is teeth whitening? Procedure, price and duration

The search for the perfect smile has become an obsession for many people. It is no longer enough to have a healthy mouth, and its beauty is also sought. And teeth whitening is one-of the most demanded services.

What is teeth whitening?

Teeth whitening is a dental aesthetic treatment with which the enamel of the teeth is clarified. The passing of the years, eating habits or undergoing specific treatments cause it to darken. This procedure is based on the use of bleaching agents (carbamide peroxide and hydrogen peroxide) that act by causing the therapy to penetrate the dentin, causing the decomposition of the organic compounds trapped in it.

For example, coffee and tea, tobacco use… are the most frequent causes. Using teeth whitening, the specialist removes all those stains that cause our teeth to change color.

But what does it consist of? And what do dentists use to whiten teeth? Very easy. There are several different methods.

  • With laser or LED light. A gel containing between 15 and 30% hydrogen peroxide is applied to the denture. Using daylight, the gel is activated, and the tooth is whitened. The process takes about an hour-and is done in the clinic.
  • With the use of custom splints. The dentist is in charge of manufacturing personalized splints. Inside, the bleaching gel is placed. The specialist will determine the duration of the treatment carried out from home. The treatment time varies depending on each person and the previous state of the denture, being at least 15 days. Case.

What is its price, and how long does it last?

The price will depend on the specialist. In IMQ, for example, if we undergo teeth whitening with LED light, the price will be around € 300. In the case of personalized splints, the amount amounts to about € 230. If both treatments are combined, the amount usually amounts to about € 360.

As for its duration, it is not a permanent treatment. The speed with which our teeth darken will depend on the reason that has caused the appearance of stains and whether we change our habits. As a general rule, it usually lasts between 5 and 7 years, with souvenir sessions.

Is teeth whitening safe?

Yes, it is safe, but it could have specific side effects, as it is possible for the patient to suffer from some transient tooth sensitivity. The level of sensation will depend on each person. Toothpaste is often recommended for sensitive teeth. The usual thing is that these discomforts have disappeared in 48 hours.

When is its use discouraged?

Although it is a very safe treatment, it is discouraged in:

  • Pregnant or breastfeeding women.
  • People whose mouth is not healthy. For example, with cavities or any other dental problem.
  • People in dental treatment. It makes no sense to apply a whitening when going through another treatment. It is advisable to finish with one before starting with the other.
  • Those patients who have fissures in the tooth enamel. Although teeth whitening does not damage the enamel, it is not recommended if we have it in poor condition.
